Horses have long held a place in our collective imagination. Our histories are deeply intertwined spanning centuries and inspiring many cultures around the globe.
These photographs are reflections on the effortless ability horses possess to walk through our myths, memories, dreams, and reality. Captured at dawn and dusk, the time in myth and lore when the boundary between the conscious and unconscious is said to be thin, these images evoke the many roles horses have played in human life—from mythic beast, noble warrior, and loyal laborer to young girls' dream.
These photographs also serve as a love letter to the lasting fascination horses have cast on our imaginations—especially my own—capturing their ethereal beauty and timeless grace.
This project began when, while hiking in Kentucky, I stumbled upon a sign for a nearby Appaloosa farm. Curious, I followed the road and discovered a magical paddock filled with spotted foals and their mothers. These weren’t the sleek sport and dressage horses Kentucky is famous for; they were a true herd, thriving in their natural surroundings under the care of a warm and generous woman named Lisa. She welcomed me and allowed me to connect with them in a way I had always dreamed of as a girl. I was drawn to build a relationship with and document this herd of mothers and foals to satisfy a yearning that honored my younger self. With each visit being more profound and moving than the last, the project is ongoing.
